Subaru Crosstrek vs. The Competition
Compare the Subaru Crosstrek against the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-30, and Hyundai Kona
The Subaru Crosstrek has built its reputation for being more than a typical small crossover. It's one of the most versatile options in the subcompact segment, offering comfortable accommodations, flexible cargo capacity, and well-equipped with many appealing amenities. Additionally, thanks to standard attributes like Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, X-MODE® traction management, and high ground clearance, it's a better fit for outdoor enthusiasts than most rivals, especially in the Wilderness trim.
The Crosstrek feels equally at home commuting in Nashua, running errands around Manchester, or venturing north into the White Mountains--and it's available for sale or lease here at Amherst, NH. Here's a quick look at how it compares in a few key areas to three prominent class competitors, the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-30, and Hyundai Kona.

Subaru Crosstrek vs. Honda HR-V
- All-Weather Traction: Every Subaru Crosstrek includes Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and at least 8.7 inches of ground clearance, so you do not have to upgrade for better all-terrain ability and more confidence in Amherst winters. The HR-V rides lower and reserves its on-road-focused AWD system as an option.
- Performance: As of the 2026 model year, all gas-powered Crosstrek models come standard with a 2.5-liter BOXER engine that generates 182 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. There's also an all-new hybrid variant (194 horsepower) with significantly improved efficiency. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder Honda HR-V has less internal motivation (158 horsepower/138 pound-feet of torque) and doesn't offer a hybrid option.
- Off-Pavement Hardware: With standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, Subaru X-MODE®, and high ground clearance, the Crosstrek can venture beyond the asphalt in any configuration. The Wilderness trim takes that rugged capability to the next level with dual-function X-MODE®, 9.3 inches of ground clearance, all-terrain tires, protective skid plates, and more. The HR-V's available AWD system can assist in bad weather, but it's not as adept for off-road excursions.
- Technology: The Crosstrek's 11.6-inch touchscreen is larger and more premium-feeling than the HR-V's 9.0-inch infotainment display. Additionally, while both models have standard driver-assist technologies, the Crosstrek has a more advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering system, plus steering-responsive headlights, which the HR-V doesn't offer.
Subaru Crosstrek vs. Mazda CX-30
- Accommodations: While both models are part of the subcompact crossover class, the Crosstrek makes better use of its interior space. Drivers and passengers will appreciate the Crosstrek's ample head and shoulder room, as well as its improved outward visibility. The Crosstrek also provides nice-to-have touches like wide rear door openings and available water-repellent StarTex® upholstery, which is easy to clean and ideal for muddy trail days or snowy commutes.
- Versatility: The Subaru Crosstrek has an edge in cargo-carrying practicality over the Mazda CX-30. While both models have ~20 cubic feet behind the second row, the Crosstrek boasts 54.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. That's one of the largest cargo areas in the segment and far exceeds the CX-30's 45.2 cubic feet.
- Infotainment: Most Subaru Crosstrek models have a large 11.6-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, giving you intuitive, clutter-free access to numerous smartphone features. The Mazda CX-30 features a standard 8.8-inch display, while higher trims are equipped with a 10.25-inch display. Additionally, instead of a convenient touchscreen, the CX-30's infotainment system uses an awkward dial mounted in the center console.
- Driver Aids: While both models offer extensive driver-assistance rosters, the Crosstrek makes certain desirable features more accessible. Additionally, Subaru's Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control includes a lane-centering function, which isn't available in the CX-30. The Crosstrek also comes standard with steering-responsive headlights for improved cornering visibility at night. This feature is available only on the CX-30's highest trim levels.
Subaru Crosstrek vs. Hyundai Kona
- Accommodations: The Crosstrek offers nicely cushioned, supportive, and bolstered seats with easy position adjustability. When you add the well-tuned suspension, you get a combination that provides more comfort over long distances than the Hyundai Kona. While both models offer refined interiors, the Crosstrek feels a bit less drab.
- Efficiency: The Crosstrek boasts impressive fuel economy for a vehicle with standard all-wheel drive, achieving an EPA-estimated 29 mpg combined compared to 26 mpg in the Kona. Additionally, the Crosstrek outperformed its EPA rating in independent tests by Car and Driver.
- Performance: The Subaru Crosstrek comes standard with a 2.5-liter BOXER® engine that produces 182 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. It also offers an all-new hybrid version with 194 horsepower and even higher efficiency ratings. The Kona's standard 2.0-liter engine falls behind with just 147 horsepower. It also doesn't offer a hybrid variant.
- Capability: Standard all-wheel drive, higher ground clearance, and an X-MODE® traction system make the Crosstrek a better choice for drivers who regularly venture beyond paved roads. The difference is even more apparent in the Wilderness trim, which adds all-terrain tires, protective skid plates and body cladding, dual-function X-MODE®, terrain-tuned suspension, and more.
